Description
Ascomycin is a 23-membered macrolide lactone that is produced by the fermentation of Streptomyces hygroscopicus and shows strong immunosuppressant properties. It is an ethyl analog of FK506 and blocks the peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase activity of the protein via binding to FK-506-binding protein (FKBP12). It has a role as an immunosuppressive agent and reduces the production of IL-2, IL-4 and IL-10, and also blocking the mast cell allergic response. It also plays a role as an antifungal agent and a bacterial metabolite.
