Description
Colchicine is an alkaloid isolated from Colchicum autumnale and shows anti-gout and anti-inflammatory activities. It used to treat a variety of conditions, including gout, recurrent pericarditis, and familial Mediterranean fever. It has also been shown, the colchicine can potentially reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in those with coronary artery disease. Colchicine works via different mechanisms, including reduction of the chemotaxis of neutrophils, inhibition of inflammasome signaling, and decreasing the production of cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β).
