Description
Metronidazole is a synthetic nitroimidazole derivative with antiprotozoal and antibacterial activities that is widely used in the treatment of many anaerobic and certain protozoan and parasitic infections. It is proposed that the reduction of metronidazole in anaerobic bacteria and protozoans generates an intermediate form that can inhibit DNA synthesis and bacterial cell growth via inducing DNA strand breaks.
